The Nest Protect is available in both black and white (the black is exclusively sold through Nest directly) and also comes in battery or AC-powered models. The ring also has a motion detector which turns it white briefly when someone passes under to provide illumination. The Nest Protect warns of an alarm sounding briefly before it does. I tested the IQ Outdoor during different times of day in different weather conditions with different hair styles -- and even wore sunglasses to try to confuse it. It also successfully picked up Chris and a couple of other people I added to my database. The $349 Nest Cam IQ Outdoor (£329, roughly AU$450, converted) is a weatherproof home security camera with strong performance, but its high price will scare a lot of people away. The Nest Cam Outdoor’s magnetic base is convenient, but it also makes it relatively easy for a thief to snatch your camera off its mount and take it with them. Once you have the mounting plate securely installed, the Nest Cam’s magnetic base snaps right onto it. It’ll take you a bit of effort to pull the cam off the mount again. The Google Nest Cam Outdoor hooks onto just about any surface on the outside of your house. It has a magnetic mounting base that you can screw into a wall or even attach to a flat metal surface like a door frame.
The Google Nest Cam Outdoor has all the features you want in an outdoor security camera plus a few extras. Because I installed this camera temporarily for testing purposes, I didn't drill holes through any walls. I instead fed the cord straight down from the camera to an outdoor outlet, which worked well for me, but isn't recommended. You could always feed the cord through a door to an interior outlet, but that isn't as "finished-looking" and you risk tripping over the cable if it isn't secured well enough. The live feed was crisp and clear, the alerts were prompt and the facial recognition algorithm never mistook me for someone else. When the IQ Outdoor sees a new face, it asks if you know the person. If so, you can assign a name and add that person to your database of "familiar faces" in the app. You'll get an alert when Nest thinks it sees someone you've added to your facial recognition database.
On May 7, 2019, it was announced that Works with Nest would be discontinued effective August 31, 2019. Users are being directed to migrate to Google accounts and Google Assistant integration instead; doing so will remove the ability to use Works with Nest. Google stated that it would give "a small number of thoroughly vetted partners" access to additional data. In August 2020 Google announced intent to invest $450 million in ADT Inc. for a 6.6% stake in the company. The companies intend to integrate Nest devices with ADT's security monitoring services and eventually make them the “cornerstone of ADT’s smart home offering”, according to Nest.

The company would operate independently from Google's other businesses. The Nest Cam Outdoor has top-notch features and excellent integrations. None of Google Nest’s products are known for being nice to your budget. Nest almost always has the best tech around, and that comes at a price.
Supersight does make it easier to see objects more quickly. In one person alert, someone walked by the camera carrying a broom. Later, the same person carried a leaf blower within range of the camera.
If it’s too much for your internet speeds or data package, you can lower the resolution through the Nest app. The Nest Cam Outdoor is pretty easy to operate through the Google Nest app. The app lets you adjust alerts and settings, so you don’t have to sift through 50 million alerts about waving tree branches or passing cars every day. Some cameras give you activity zones in blocks, and you can select which ones are active. It’s imprecise, and you might get more alerts than you want for one area but not enough for another.
