All other cruises to/from Hawaii will call in a foreign port (usually Canada or Mexico), adding on many sea days and at least one non-Hawaiian stop to their itinerary (not a bad thing in my mind, but a significant difference). If you only have one week off work and want to cruise Hawaii or don’t like sea days, the Pride of America is your only option. If you feel like venturing out a bit further, you can catch a $2 (cash only and the driver cannot make change) open-air trolley that will take you around town. Although Hawaii cruises are more about the destination than the ship itself, we're pleased to report that Norwegian has done a wonderful job of keeping the 13-year-old vessel updated. Although minor things -- like bathroom floor tile and random dead ends on certain decks -- give away Pride of America's age, modern decor and color palettes keep it feeling contemporary. For many cruisers, Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime destination, so it makes sense that passengers would want to maximize their time and immerse themselves as fully into the local experience as possible -- even onboard. Pride of America helps travelers to do just that with local dishes, themed enrichment lectures, hula dance tutorials and Hawaiian language classes. The short stop POA makes off the coast of Kailua-Kona is wonderful. The views are spectacular and the historic town is a nice place to stroll for a bit. We’re glad that we had those options as the better food is definitely in the specialty restaurants. Jefferson’s Bistro, the French restaurant, was our favorite and the best meal we had on the ship. Cagney’s Steakhouse was good, and the only restaurant that we found that had lobster, but the service was very slow and our server got our order mixed up. At the Teppanyaki restaurant, our chef put on a great show, but the food was just okay. Tuesday is the busiest day at the park – pick another day if at all possible.

Only two of the ship's specialty restaurants -- Cagney's Steakhouse and Le Bistro (sometimes referred to as Jefferson's Bistro on this ship) -- are open for diners.
This half-mile hike is suitable for everyone as it's wheelchair and stroller accessible. The paved path meanders through a stark yet beautiful landscape buried by falling cinder from lava fountains of the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption. You might find volcanic debris in the form of glass-like droplets and strands called Pele’s Tears and Pele’s Hair, respectively, named after the revered Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. Nēnē (Hawaiian geese) frequent this area; refrain from feeding or interacting with this threatened species.
