First timer's guide to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

All other cruises to/from Hawaii will call in a foreign port (usually Canada or Mexico), adding on many sea days and at least one non-Hawaiian stop to their itinerary (not a bad thing in my mind, but a significant difference). If you only have one week off work and want to cruise Hawaii or don’t like sea days, the Pride of America is your only option. When planning your days in port, note that with the exception of Kona, the ship docks at ports that are short driving distances to any points of interest. This is a noticeable difference for passengers used to cruising in places like the Caribbean where most activities can be found immediately on shore.

So, those were all kind of first-world problems, but still, when you’re paying for a good experience and not getting it, it’s disappointing. Norwegian Cruise Line is known for their “freestyle” dining. You can dine when you like, where you like and with who you like. You are not limited to a set dining time or assigned to a group table. Sometimes we had issues flushing the toilet and once in the middle of the night, we didn’t have any water at all.

It’s incredible waking up on a different island every other day and seeing the isles from an out-at-sea vantage point. I was chuffed to be asked by MyCruises (an Australian travel company) to experience their #1 selling cruise, the Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of America. Liner's godmother is Elaine Chao - US Secretary of Labor at the time. The naming ceremony was held in NYC New York on June 17, 2005.

If you feel like venturing out a bit further, you can catch a $2 (cash only and the driver cannot make change) open-air trolley that will take you around town. Although Hawaii cruises are more about the destination than the ship itself, we're pleased to report that Norwegian has done a wonderful job of keeping the 13-year-old vessel updated. Although minor things -- like bathroom floor tile and random dead ends on certain decks -- give away Pride of America's age, modern decor and color palettes keep it feeling contemporary. For many cruisers, Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime destination, so it makes sense that passengers would want to maximize their time and immerse themselves as fully into the local experience as possible -- even onboard. Pride of America helps travelers to do just that with local dishes, themed enrichment lectures, hula dance tutorials and Hawaiian language classes. The itinerary is excellent and the island destinations are fantastic.

I did Molokini—an offshore crescent-shaped crater that's home to more than 250 species of tropical fish—on my first visit to Hawaii and enjoyed it. Some fellow passengers I spoke with on the recent cruise did Lanai and encountered lots of sea turtles and spinner dolphins. With two active volcanoes and ongoing construction to repair damage caused by the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, it’s important to stay on marked trails and overlooks and keep out of closed areas. And no matter what you may have seen on social media, please leave the rocks alone and unstacked. Park staff often use ahu (stacked rocks) to mark trails; it’s not an invitation to do the same.

There are bubblegum hues in Pink's Champagne Bar, for instance, and a riot of vivid bead-inspired colors in the Mardi Gras Cabaret Lounge & Nightclub. There are two pools, multiple hot tubs and lots of appealing outside deck space—including the Aloha Lanai Bar aft on deck 11—ideal for sail-away cocktails at sunset. The ship, which carries 2,186 passengers at full occupancy but is sailing at 50 percent capacity through at least November 2022, is 17 years old and unique to the NCL fleet. It features a distinctly Americana theme—the main reception area resembles something straight out of Jeffersonian Washington, D.C.—with décor that's kitschy and colorful rather than contemporary and neutral. Go for a run with the best views on the jogging track, or break a sweat at the Santa Fe Fitness Center.

The short stop POA makes off the coast of Kailua-Kona is wonderful. The views are spectacular and the historic town is a nice place to stroll for a bit. Each main-stage show on Pride of America is on for one night and one night only (two-time slots), so mark your cruise calendar! We made it to four performances and thoroughly enjoyed them all.

We’re glad that we had those options as the better food is definitely in the specialty restaurants. Jefferson’s Bistro, the French restaurant, was our favorite and the best meal we had on the ship. Cagney’s Steakhouse was good, and the only restaurant that we found that had lobster, but the service was very slow and our server got our order mixed up. At the Teppanyaki restaurant, our chef put on a great show, but the food was just okay. Tuesday is the busiest day at the park – pick another day if at all possible.

Avoid Deck 8 Balcony Cabins

Enjoy a night of gastronomic proportions at one of our many specialty restaurants. Sip your favorite cocktail as you select from choice cuts of Angus beef at Cagney’s Steakhouse. Enjoy delicious pasta made with the freshest ingredients inside our chic Italian eatery, La Cucina. No matter what you choose, our specialty dining options feature the tastes you’ll crave. Serving a wide variety of culinary delights to please every palate, our complimentary dining options include two main dining rooms, a help-yourself buffet and a variety of casual cafés, grills and on-the-go choices. Plus, our Main Dining Rooms offer a menu that changes daily, Chef's Signature Dishes and carefully selected wine recommendations, guaranteeing a different culinary adventure with every visit.

The photo above may cause introverts to run, hyperventilating, to the nearest paper bag (I’m breathing into one right now!). If you prefer a more private and serene place to relax, hit the sun decks above the Lido for comfortable and more secluded lounging options. Look closely at the above photo and spot the tiny red fish swimming in the wrong direction near where the carpet transitions to a different pattern. Thankfully, the fish on the carpet on the Pride of America will point you in the right direction. As such, you won’t do much lounging around the ship in your robe with a cocktail in one hand and a soft serve cone in the other, turning the pages of your book with an elbow. New – we’ve compiled a detailed list of what to see and do on a cruise at each Hawaiian port.

In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent. I still have four more days of adventure aboard Pride of America in Hawaii to go, and I'm already looking at how I can come back and do it all over again. The ship serves as a comfortable home base from which to explore Hawaii; a floating resort that just happens to move to a different location every other day.

Stateroom photos are for sample purposes only -- actual design and layout may vary. In our experience, the closures haven't affected the onboard product at all. Bars and lounges are rarely crowded, and while securing a reservation at Cagney's or Le Bistro requires a bit of finagling, the food onboard has so far been good to quite good at the ship's complimentary dining venues. I love East Meets West, but I haven't missed it on this cruise. The reduced passenger count also means that a number of amenities are closed. Only two of the ship's specialty restaurants -- Cagney's Steakhouse and Le Bistro (sometimes referred to as Jefferson's Bistro on this ship) -- are open for diners.

This half-mile hike is suitable for everyone as it's wheelchair and stroller accessible. The paved path meanders through a stark yet beautiful landscape buried by falling cinder from lava fountains of the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption. You might find volcanic debris in the form of glass-like droplets and strands called Pele’s Tears and Pele’s Hair, respectively, named after the revered Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. Nēnē (Hawaiian geese) frequent this area; refrain from feeding or interacting with this threatened species.
